FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS about BI Crew
IS PRIOR ROWING OR HIGH SCHOOL TEAM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED?
Crew is the ultimate team sport because it requires athletes to work in perfect unison, to move their boat as one or speed is lost. There are no individual stars or MVPs and no other sport demands more teamwork
Rowing is the ultimate walk-on sport and no experience is necessary! The coaching staff takes care of all the training. All you need is dedication and spirit. BI Crew is open to all grades and is recruiting both men and women.
HOW MUCH TIME DOES CREW TAKE UP?
Winter Training begins in mid November and consists of weight training and the use of erg machines to simulate rowing. On the water practices begin mid February. The Team practices five days a week Monday through Friday.
DOES CREW INTERFERE WITH SCHOOL AND OTHER ACTIVITIES?
You can still participate in crew and miss winter practices if you are involved in another school sport.

No, we practice after school.
WHEN IS THE CREW SEASON?
The season begins in mid November with strength training and work on the erg machines (they simulate rowing) in the BI weight room. In mid February water practices begin and by the end of March the regatta season is underway and lasts through May. The Bishop Ireton Crew Association provides a tent with food for the rowers and their parents on regatta days. We have a fantastic cheering section!
WHERE DO YOU GUYS PRACTICE?
We practice on the Anacostia in Washington, DC, as we are members of the Anacostia Community Boathouse Association. The Anacostia has the “flattest” water (meaning no wakes and little wind) which translates to more practice time then most other schools that row directly on the Potomac.
IS THERE A HEIGHT/WEIGHT REQUIREMENT?
There is no height or weight requirement. Remember that Crew is the ultimate walk-on sport as it does not demand previous experience, only the desire to learn and the dedication to row.
IS CREW A VARSITY SPORT?
Although it is still titled a club sport, the crew team is part of the Athletic Department and you can earn varsity letters for your participation.
WHO CAN JOIN THE TEAM?
